Transfers between accounts
Direct bank transfers have evolved from slow batch clearing into instantaneous real-time rails. However, the legal mechanics of reversing an instant transfer remain fundamentally distinct from cards.
The modern clearing networks
Depending on your geography, bank transfers move over dedicated clearing rails:
- Faster Payments (UK): Clears within seconds 24/7/365, supporting transfers up to £1,000,000 per transaction depending on institutional limits.
- SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (Eurozone): Executes in under 10 seconds across participating European banks.
- FedNow & RTP (United States): Modern instant settlement rails operating alongside traditional ACH batch clearing.
- Open Banking (Pay by Bank): Allows accredited third-party providers (PISPs) to initiate a push payment directly from your banking application with your explicit consent.
The fundamental risk: Authorised Push Payment (APP)
With card payments, if an unauthorized transaction occurs, the consumer is protected under strict zero-liability regulations. With account-to-account transfers, because the customer explicitly logs into their bank and approves the payment, the system categorizes it as an authorized transaction.
Confirmation of Payee (CoP) protections
To combat misdirected transfers and impersonation fraud, banking authorities introduced Confirmation of Payee. When entering a sort code, account number, or IBAN, the system checks whether the recipient account name matches official bank records.
If you see a "No Match" or "Partial Match" warning, halt the transaction immediately and verify the recipient's details through an independent, verified communication channel.
What happens when a transfer goes to the wrong account?
Under voluntary banking codes and statutory payment service directives, banks operate misdirected payment processes. If you enter an incorrect digit:
- Notify your sending bank within hours of identifying the error.
- Your bank contacts the recipient bank, which places a hold on the mistaken funds if still present.
- Under standard regulations, the receiving party is contacted and given an opportunity to contest the recall before funds are returned.
