Cards at checkout

When you swipe, tap, or type your card details into an online store, a multi-stage communication begins between the merchant acquiring bank, the card network, and your issuing bank.

The anatomy of an authorisation hold

A widespread source of consumer confusion is the difference between an authorisation hold and final settlement. When you place a hotel deposit, hire a vehicle, or pump petrol at an automated pump, the merchant sends an authorisation request for an estimated sum.

This request does not instantly transfer money from your account. Instead, your issuing bank rings-fences that exact portion of your credit limit or checking balance. To your mobile banking application, your balance appears reduced immediately.

Important Consumer Tip: If an order is canceled before dispatch, merchants often release the authorisation rather than processing a refund. An authorisation release can take between 2 to 10 working days to disappear from your statement, depending on your bank's clearance cycles.

Debit vs. Credit: The structural boundary

While debit and credit cards carry identical 16-digit primary account numbers and EMV chip standards, their risk profiles differ fundamentally:

Statutory purchase rights and Section 75

In the United Kingdom, credit card transactions benefit from statutory joint liability under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. If you pay even a portion of an eligible purchase (between £100 and £30,000) using a credit card, the credit issuer shares equal liability with the merchant for breach of contract or misrepresentation.

This means that if an airline ceases trading or a contractor fails to deliver materials, you may direct your claim straight to the card issuer if the merchant fails to provide recourse.

Foreign transaction markups and DCC

When shopping with an overseas merchant or traveling abroad, checkout terminals frequently offer Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), presenting the total in your domestic currency instead of local currency. This convenience typically masks a retail currency conversion markup ranging from 3.5% to 8% above interbank rates.

Selecting payment in the local merchant currency and allowing your home bank to perform the wholesale network conversion almost universally represents the lower-cost consumer route.
